Local College Fair re-named in honor of
Dr. Rudolph G. Gordon

Greenville, South Carolina - Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. announces it is renaming its annual College Fair for Upstate College Fair to the Rudolph G. Gordon College Fair. It will be held injunction wih the annual Martin Luther King Youth Awards at Furman's University Center on Saturday, February 2nd.

This program is a part of Alpha Phi Alpha’s national effort, “Go to High School, Go to College”, and GGL Chapter is holding the program with Furman University continuing its four year partnership with MLK events. Last year, GGL, with the help of local High Schools, awarded more than 250 awards in five categories: Academics, Art, Athletics, Leadership, & Music, and College Fair had more a dozen College recruiters with more 250 partrons in attending he event.

Dr. Gordon, a native of Kingstree, South Carolina, was born on October 21, 1937. Dr. Gordon received a doctorate in education from the University of South Carolina, a master's degree in education from South Carolina State College, and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Benedict College, in 1959.

In April 1996, Bro. Gordon was named the second African-American Superintendent for Greenville County, becoming the district's seventh superintendent since consolidation in 1952. The School District of Greenville County is the largest school district in South Carolina and the 66th largest in the nation serving approximately 66,000 students. Under his tenure, the district embarked on a building project that would include the renovation or construction of all schools over the following 15 years. He served with great distinction and is well respected across the state for his leadership. He retired as Superintendent in 2000. Bro. Gordon, Sr. passed into Omega chapter at around 2:00 am on February 23, 2012.
