Award Program & College Fair focus on Youth Choices
More than 260 Greenville High School winners will receive award this year.

Alpha Brothers with College recruiters during the Program and Fair on Feb. 3rd

Greenville, South Carolina- Alpha Phi Alpha Greenville Foundation again sponsored their 39th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Program & Dr. Rudolph Gordon College Fair at Furman's University Center on Saturday, February 3rd.

This is one of many of programs that are inspired by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s national effort, “Go to High School, Go to College”, which started in 1916. The Foundation along with Gamma Gamma Chapter held this program with Furman University, continuing its nine-year partnership with conducting Martin Luther King, Jr. events.

The Rudolph G. Gordon College Fair started at 9 AM and featured 10 college representatives from Clemson University, University of SC, Furman University, Greenville Technical College and Spartanburg Methodist College. The Youth program started at 11 AM and featured 73 of the 264 of the 2018 MLK Youth Award winners from all the fourteen (14) High Schools in Greenville County. Last year, with the help of local High School District, we awarded more than 300 awards in five categories: Academics, Art, Athletics, Leadership, & Music.

"Choice followed by action is the way MLK promoted change", said Bobby Clark, Program Chair. "We hope to encourage these talented students to choose to further their education and become brighter lights in the greater beloved community". Keith Barksdale, Foundation Chairman, closed the program by "thanking the parents and the greater family that helped to bring our winners to this program. "

College Fair held two concurrent seminars on Financial Aid & College Life during the program for students and parents. the Financial Aid session, led a Financial Aid Director Bonnie Carson Durham, give advice to parents about the Financial Aid in South Carolina. The College Life session was led by Brother Jeremy Richardson along with students from USC Upstate, Clemson, and Furman University. Light refreshments were served at following the award program.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906. The Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter was chartered on August 24, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina under the Umbrella of the National Organization and the first African-American Greek-Letter Alumni Chapter in the Upstate of South Carolina.

Established in 2012 as a public 501(c)3 non-profit, tax-exempted organization, Alpha Phi Alpha Greenville Foundation's mission is to aid the poor and disadvantaged and help them toward a life of self-sufficiency. Our programs address teenage pregnancy prevention, college preparation & awareness, educational scholarships, youth leadership development and other similar programs. We serve the Upstate area of South Carolina and are affiliated with the Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of ΑΦΑ in Greenville, South Carolina.

Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on August 24, 1941. The Chapter was chartered as third Alumni chapter in SC under the Fraternal administration of Bro. Ray W. Logan, 16th General President, and Bro. Jos. H.B. Evans, General Secretary. For more than seventy years, and under the Umbrella of the National Organization, Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter set as her objective to carry out the mandates of "Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind".
