23rd Annual MLK Commemorative Service to be held on January 21, 2002
There will also be a MLK Youth Program & College Fair held on January 19th.

The Greenville Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will conduct the MLK Scholarship Commemorative Banquet. The Banquet will be held at 7:00 PM on January 21, 2002 at the Embassy Suites Greenville located just off of I-85 and Laurens Road on Verdae Blvd. The Banquet, along the MLK Youth Program, is an annual part of the Chapter's Martin Luther King celebration held the weekend before his birthday.

The MLK Banquet, in addition to honoring Dr. King's message and dream, is an effort to raise funds to award scholarships to area high school students. A portion of banquet's ticket goes toward Luke Chatman Scholarship fund that will award three scholarships this year. The keynote speaker is the Dr. Leroy Davis, President of South Carolina State University. This year's MLK Community Award winner will be announced at the banquet. Last year, Former Greenville NAACP Chairman, Robert Young received the award.

Tickets are $30 per person and the event is open to the public. Interested persons can buy tickets from any brother of the Greenville Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. To buy tickets, please visit our website's MLK purchase form at www.gglapa.org.

The MLK Youth and Upstate College Fair will be held on January 19, 2002 at Southside High School. This program honors deserving high school students who have excelled in five areas: Art, Athletics, Music, Leadership and Academics. Last year, over 75 awards winners were recognized, and the college fair brought several representatives from local colleges and universities. Also, two panel discussions were held for parents and students about college expectations and financial aid options.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is the nation's first African-American Greek-letter fraternity established by college students. Established on December 4, 1906 on the campus of Cornell University, Alpha Phi Alpha has more than 750 chapters worldwide with over 100,000 members. Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter is the Greenville chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha established in 1941.
