Annual Banquet honors Dr. King’s legacy and urges empowering Community though Economic Development

Greenville, SC: Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter held its 25th annual Martin Luther King Commemorative Banquet at the Greenville Hilton on January 19th at 7:00 PM. More than 200 people attended the night’s celebration which is held to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and also to raise the funds for the Luke H. Chatman Scholarship, a local scholarship for Greenville County High School Students.

Keynote Speaker for the event was Darrin Thomas, Vice President of BlackPages USA, and spoke on the theme was Economic Development in the African-America. BlackPages USA has been a steady promoter of supporting African-American-owned Businesses. “We must support on own, but it is two way street”, said Bro. Thomas, “Business must provide a quality service or product we can support”.

The Chapter also awarded the Martin Luther King Community Citizenship Award to the Rev. Thomas Bowman of St Mark United Methodist Church of Taylors. Past winners of the award include Ralph Anderson, Annie Maw Austin, Lila Brock, Rev. S.C. Cureton, Richard Kerns, Roger Owens, Judge Willie T. Smith, Dr. Rudolph Gordon, Mike Burton, Bro. Fred Bostic, and Mayor Pro Temp Fleming. Proclamations from the State, County and City were presented during the banquet. Entertainment was provided by Bro. Ed Hill, who performed a monologue taken from Dr. King’s speeches and writing.

This mark the second year of the Banquet was at the Hilton which provided an elegant atmosphere for the event. A portion of banquet's ticket goes toward Luke Chatman Scholarship fund that will award one $3000 scholarship this year.

Bro. Darrin Thomas was the Keynote speaker for this year.

Bro. Ed Hill performed a monologue of Dr. Kings speeches

Rep. Ralph Anderson presented a Proclamation from the State.
