GGL presents 2002 MLK Award
to Lillian Flemming

Greenville, SC, January 21, 2002 --- The Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., awarded the 2002 Martin Luther King, Jr. Citizenship Award to Mrs. Lillian Brock Flemming of Greenville S.C. The award was one of the highlights of the 2002 MLK Commemorative Banquet held on January 21, 2002 at the Embassy Suites Hotel. The Keynote Speaker for the night was Dr. Leroy Davis, President of South Carolina State University.

Mrs. Flemming was born in Greenville, SC and is the daugther of Lila Brock and the late James Brock. She is married to the Revenend J.M. Flemming and has 3 sons, Davis,. J.M, Jr. and Emanuel. She attended public school in Greenville SC, and is a 1967 Honor graduate of Sterling High School. She received her Undergraduate and Master's Degree from Furman University with further studies at Clemson University and the University of South Carolina.

Mrs. Flemming was recently re-elected to a third term as on the Greenville City Council, and 1989 was elected Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Greenville. She currently serves several boards to include Donaldson Commission, National Council of Nergo Women, Phillis Wheatly PostFellows, League of Women Voters, Greenville Central Area.

She is one of the first three women to enter Furman University, first black female elected to Greenville City Council, and first black to elected as Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor Pro Tem of Greenville City Council.

Previous winners of the MLK Citizenship Awards include Ralph Anderson, Annie Maw Austin, Lila Brock, Rev. S.C. Cureton, Richard Kerns, Roger Owens, Judge Willie T. Smith, Dr. Rudolph Gordon, and Fred Bostic.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is the nation's first Greek-letter fraternity established by African-American college students established on December 4, 1906 on the campus of Cornell University. There are more than 700 chapters worldwide with over 100,000 members. Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter is the local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha in Greenville, SC, established on August 24, 1941.
