Greenville, SC, October
18, 2003 – Gamma
Gamma Lambda Chapter along with other brothers from across
the state conducted a Project Alpha seminar on Saturday, October
18, 2003 from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm at the Central Community
Ministries. Several chapters from the upstate, especially Pi
Alpha chapter (Clemson University) played a major part in the
program. Project Alpha is a national partnership with the March
of Dimes and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. that seeks to
encourage sexually responsible choices among young men.
Fifty-eight (58) young men from across the update participated
in the day-long seminar which included workshops on "Good
Grooming, Hygiene, and Personal Health", "Healthy
Dating” and “Knowing the Limit & the Law When
It Comes to Male/Female Relationships". The seminar's
goal was to frankly discuss life situations and the consequences
of making bad choices. "If they know what can happen then
we hope they will make good choices for the rest of the lives",
says Don Weston, Project Alpha Coordinator.
Several keynote presenters share some very valuable information
and life-changing testimonies to the young men. Some of the
speakers included Rev. Vincent Thomas of Tabernacle Baptist
Church, Coach Kevin Nickelberry of Clemson University’s
Basketball Team, and Melvin Stroble, District Director for
South Carolina.
"A big thanks are extended to the several companies
and organizations which support the Project Alpha event,
and to Bro. Weston and his committee for making this event so
successful over the years", remarked Bobby Clark, Gamma
Gamma Lambda President. Sponsors included Ford Motor
Credit, the South Carolina Alpha Phi Alpha Education
Foundation, Jack-in-the-Box of the Upstate, and Wal-Mart.
Future plans are to continue to expand the event to cover the
entire Upstate area.
