Greenville, South Carolina: In
keeping with the mandates of the national organization, the Gamma
Gamma Lambda Chapter of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., fulfilled one of it's national
projects – Go to High School, Go To College – through
its recent Youth Award and Recognition Program and College Fair.
This year's theme was "Achieving the Dream by Encouraging
Youth".
Held on Saturday, January 17, 2004, the Youth Program recognized
over 235 Greenville County students in the areas of Academics,
Art, Athletics, Leadership and Music. The majority of the awardees
were recommended and nominated by their high school teachers,
counselors, and/or administrators.
The second segment of the day's activities included the annual
College Fair itself. This was incorporated into our Go To College
program some time ago in an effort to bring college admission
and financial aid to the community. There were over ten colleges
and universities represented at the fair including Benedict College,
Clemson University, University of South Carolina, Winthrop University,
the Citadel, North Greenville College, and several more.
There were two workshops during the college fair that focused
on "What to Know about Financial Aid" and "What
to Expect in the First Year of College". Both sessions provided
meaningful information to the students and their families.
